Toonami: Give Ecchi a Chance

Since its premiere, I have been enjoying the revived Toonami a lot. While we're had our ups and downs, the block as a whole has been a great experience and is one of the most-connected-to-its-audience television blocks in our modern day, which is an excellent thing. I hope it stays around for a long while.

However, that's not to say Toonami is 100% flawless.

They seem to have this odd phobia, this utter horror of airing shows of a certain genre. And unlike a certain other genre, this one they could honestly manage to get away with.

This genre is ecchi.

Don't get me wrong here, do I think Toonami should show the likes of Kiss x Sis and To Love-Ru? By no means. Toonami at its heart is an action block and always will be.

I just think that this action block should experiment out of their comfort zone and air shows which combine the action element with more racy content. Oh, wait...they're already doing that.

Black Lagoon had bare breasts. Kill la Kill drowns in fanservice. Tenchi Muyo! GXP wasn't afraid to occasionally show skin. Hellsing Ultimate had those weird panty shots in the last OVA and...oh yeah, corpse sex.
'
The difference is these shows aren't labeled as ecchi. Not that they're any tamer in content than some other shows labeled as 'ecchi'.

So what kind of ecchi shows do I think Toonami should show? Here are some suggestions.

Note: The rest of this post contains some images that aren't explicit, distasteful, or showing bare nudity in any way, but that might be eyebrow-raising in a public setting. Look over your shoulder before continuing on.

1. Medaka Box

This show starts out as a run-of-the-mill school comedy but becomes more action-oriented along the way. It also features a strong female lead and is overall entertaining to watch and would likely bring in viewers.

Fanservice Level: Moderate

There's nothing in Medaka Box we haven't seen in Space Dandy. Jiggling breasts, lingerie, swimsuits, humorous "seduction" scenes - the show stops short of showing any actual nude scenes and the fanservice is honestly so funny at some points it'd be hard to be considered arousing.

2. High School of the Dead

High School of the Dead is probably the most recommended ecchi for Toonami. It's honestly action-packed and a fun ride - the only problem being that pesky fanservice.

Fanservice Level: High

This anime earned its TV-MA rating with some pretty raunchy fanservice, from panty shots, jiggling, bath scenes, and even an attempted rape. Combined with the graphic violence and the liberalness of the dub's profanity, this is a show that probably shouldn't go right after Dragon Ball Z Kai.

I do believe Toonami could air it though, considering they aired Kill la Kill.

3. Lupin the 3rd: The Woman Called Fujiko Mine

One of the most acclaimed anime of 2012, and considering Adult Swim/Toonami's history with the original Lupin the 3rd, there's no way the folks at Toonami haven't looked at this before.

What's keeping it from airing?

Fanservice Level: High

I might have picked a pretty tame picture, but it's the only PG-13 fanservice-esque picture I could find from this show.

This is the only anime with detailed nudity on the list. And it has a lot of it. The opening sequence has full-frontal nudity, including a hand pulling on Fujiko's bare breast causing an implied orgasm.

However, we're also in 2015. With the success and very little controversy from Kill la Kill and Hellsing Ultimate, I wonder if Toonami would be willing to take a chance and slap a TV-MA-S on this with blurs over the nipples and the OP shortened.

Do you agree with my list? Are there any other ecchi anime you'd like to see on Toonami? Leave a comment if so.
